Douglas returns to Ravens in trade

Cody is waived; 26 players on the bubble as final cut nears

The Ravens traded two draft picks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for defensive lineman Marques Douglas and waived 2005 second-round pick Dan Cody.

To acquire the eight-year veteran, the Ravens sent Tampa Bay a late-round draft choice in 2009 and a conditional pick in 2010.

Douglas, 31, will fill the void left in the rotation by Dwan Edwards, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

The Ravens will also pick up the contract for Douglas, who recently signed a four-year, $10.1million contract with Tampa Bay.

This is the second stint with the Ravens for Douglas. He had 133 tackles and 10 sacks while starting for the Ravens in 2003 and 2004.

"We're really happy to get a quality player who is also a quality person back to our team, especially this time of year," general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

By adding Douglas, the Ravens parted ways with Cody, a linebacker who played only 16 snaps in his three-year NFL career because of injuries.

Cody has dealt with a sprained anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee (2005), a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee (2006), torn cartilage in his right knee (2007) and a broken left foot (2007).

He played 10 snaps in the final five minutes of Saturday's game, which was his first game action since Nov. 26, 2006.

"I look at myself on film and I know I'm still not the player I was coming out of college," Cody said Tuesday, a day before getting cut. "At the same time, I really feel like I can still be the guy. I really do."

On the bubble

It appears that about 26 players are on the bubble, fighting for a handful of spots remaining on the Ravens' roster. Tonight's game against the Atlanta Falcons marks their last opportunity to make an impression before the Ravens' last major cutdown Saturday.

One veteran on the fringe could be Gary Stills, a former Pro Bowl special teams player.

"I never feel comfortable about my position," said Stills, who might be expendable after the Ravens signed NFC special teams Pro Bowl player Brendon Ayanbadejo. "I'm always on the bubble; that's how I feel."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he could feel the competitiveness on the team increase as the final cutdown day draws closer.

"I'm sure there's anxiety because guys want to be here and want to play on this team," Harbaugh said. "They have worked hard, and there are a lot of guys that have earned the right to be a part of this team. But you can only keep so many guys. I think [tonight] is going to be a big night for a lot of guys."
